I felt tonight was the final straw when I witnessed the 23 come up on the electronic substitution board. Paul Munster actually had a decent game, looked dangerous and seemed like our only attacking threat from our "strikers". The number 9 remained on yet again. Now this isn't anti Spike. I admire what this man has done for Linfield and the Irish League in his 20 years. He's a legend and deservered so. I still think he has a lot to offer us this season, his vision and football brain is probably the best at the club but to expect him to play 180 minutes every week is getting beyond a joke. It's not helping the club or is it helping the player. Tonight Spike was woeful. Saturday he was woeful, although granted he scored. He hasn't actually played well all season, yet seems to be guaranteed his first team place.
It's not just Ferguson though, lets move into our "defence", yes, what was once our strongest point has became possibly the weakest area in the team. We have two centre halfs playing the "180 minutes a week game" one of which has been absolutely awful all season, and he's the younger one of the two! We have a young centre half, our biggest prospect for many many years, even bigger than Mannus, Gault and Thompson, yet he is being asked to play right back for the simple reason our manager doesn't have the balls to dislodge Bailie and Murphy.
Now midfield, we have McAreavey a player who hasn't played well for over two seasons, can anyone actually remember a game where Maccers played well? Maybe we had injury problems tonight, just maybe. BUT if Mulgrew or Hagan weren't fit/ready then WHY are they on the bench? Neither of these players should be sitting on the bench for this overweight unfit mess of a footballer.
The signs have been coming for 3 years maybe more. We needed to be proactive rather than reactive, Christ we're not even being reactive. We still have full time professional footballers "in limbo" in regards to their future. The same thing happened last year when Thomas Stewart left us for NOTHING, yes NOTHING.
Is it time our manager packed it in?
